Celtic Shores — Hole #10: Par 5

This par 5 is long and has an elevated green that makes for a challenging eagle. The fairway caves into a big sand trap right where your drive would normally end up, so you have to find a way to place your drive in a spot that gives you a chance to get there in two.

With a good set up, you can blast a drive (perhaps a high-teed C3) over the sand to the upper part of the fairway.

Other times you won’t have the distance to get up there, so consider playing due right of the sand to the fairway there. Sometimes an A1 driver with backspin is a good option to get there. You still may need up to a driver to get there in two, and carry is key. If you do need a driver, consider that you can bounce up and on, if needed!

It’s riskier, but you can also lay up just short of the sand where there is a level spot in the fairway; this spot offers a 3-wood approach as well.

Celtic Shores — Hole #11: Par 3

We will see some interesting pin placements on the unique shape of this par 3 green, requiring you to work the ball into the wind and slope in some situations.

Here’s a nice ace from the longer right box. From the middle box, here’s a great cut into a right pin. And here’s an ace from the left box to a back pin. There’s also another tee box to the left and shorter from here, offering four looks at the green.

This par 4 is always drivable but requires you to shoot over a hill guarding the green. If you trickle down short, there’s sand…that’s okay, because being long is wet. You can either take a 3-wood (high-teed can be good) over the top, or a driver around the left side to get there.

This driver missed left but caught a friendly bounce back to the green and into the cup!

Most of the time, the best play is out left to stay level with the green for a manageable approach shot.

You can also play straight ahead if you like your odds with the uphill approach — here’s a 5-wood hole-out. This 3-wood didn’t have enough loft but got a nice skip and hop to find the hole!

You will be shooting at any of three different greens off the tee here!

To the farther back-left green, here’s a 3-wood ace.

To the middle rounder green, here’s a 5-wood ace.

You may also shoot to a closer front-right green.

This drivable par 4 should have you thinking right-center of the green to avoid all the danger elsewhere. It’s usually a 3-wood, sometimes high-teed with a headwind — here’s an example ace. Here’s a high-teed 5-wood that also finds the hole.

Hole #16 offers a couple options that are decent, and one that is difficult. First, if you can carry up on top of the hill straight ahead towards the green, you’ll have a shot there in two. It was windy, but check out this dunk! This can be a troublesome spot with a strong headwind, and it’s certainly challenging with a strong sidewind too.

Next, you can play long down the fairway past the tower to give you a line to the green in two. Here’s a long holeout from there. This one was closer to the right side of the fairway and offered a much closer look for double eagle.

The narrow fairway patch straight ahead is difficult to stick and should be a last resort for a shot at eagle. Here’s a driver worked into a right pin from there. And here’s a 3-wood into a back left pin.

Hole #17 is a par 3 way downhill with a severe penalty for missing. With a front-right pin, being short isn’t bad if you have backspin, because it will bounce down onto the green — here’s an example ace. And check out the bounces this one got to find the hole!

Wind is always a factor with this downhill shot, and you’ll see some crazy angles into the hole — check out this ace out right and blown back to a front-left pin. It’s hard not to at least put bite on your shot even when the wind is in your face, but check out the placement of this 5-wood with no spin.

You’ll finish your round on Celtic Shores by curving a drive around the mountain to the left into a green tucked behind it. This 3-wood took straighter aim at the green and took it way out right to get over and around the mountain, backspinning into the cup. This high-teed 4-wood cut the corner a bit but stayed high enough to come on down and dunk in the cup! And this driver was a perfect play to a back-left pin. Finally, check out this amazing and rare driver dunk!

You can also rotate right once and play more of a C2-type shot into the green — here’s a great 3-wood with backspin to a left pin.

This shot is very challenging with a strong wind blowing right. Perhaps your best option with that setup is a low-teed driver with max cut. If you use the Hawks, a 2-hybrid is an option as well.

If you want to preserve a good round with a tough setup, just lay out right to bring in your approach for birdie — here’s a hole-out from the fairway.

The most popular club/ball combo on this course, as with all 2015 courses, is Vultures/Grabbers. However, the Hawks are an alternate club option since lofty woods are not as important on this course.

A drivable par 4 that will really test your elevation control as you loft over the mountain and let your drive float into the green. Sand will catch some errant shots and still leave you an eagle chip, but water may catch others!

Here’s a great 4-wood dunk to a front pin. Here’s a 3-wood straight over to a center pin.

If you have masterful control of your cut shots, you can curve into tough pin placements with an opposing wind!

Downhill and fairly long — not the easiest of par 3s to be presented with as the third hole.

Here’s a driver ace to a back pin.

Pearl Lagoon — Hole #4: Par 5

The only real option off the tee is to hit it as far as you can down the fairway straight ahead. You can try to curve a shot or just blast a big B2 driver with roll or a high tee. The farther you get, the less you’ll have to curve around the mountain on the approach. This one got far enough for a straight 6-wood into the pin. This driver played just a small curve around the mountain to a back-left pin.

You’ll see an elevated landing area with fairway grass to the right, but it’s narrow and difficult to stick. If you land it, you’ll be rewarded with a mostly straight shot into the green for your second. A driver could clip the right side of the mountain but may be the necessary club with a headwind.

You’ll either have a straight shot or a small curve with any wood up to a driver into this drivable par 4 with the scenic backdrop.

From the right box, you may have the option to shoot a 3-wood through the gap in the trees straight at the green. Here’s another 3-wood medium-teed that stayed under the big leaf. A driver works too if you want more club!

This driver was way off base but caught some incredible deflections to find the hole! So did this low-teed 3-wood…wow.

Most of the time, you can just float something like a high-teed 5-wood around the left side and aim to stick the center of the green. This medium-teed 5-wood hopped up into a left pin.

An alternative to floating a wood into the green is to low-tee a driver and play a more direct angle at the green, under the left tree — check out this great ace.

Three tee boxes here provide a variety of shots each round. Here’s an ace from the back box.

Here’s a 9-iron ace from the short front box.

There look to be up to 3 different shots off the tee to give you a shot at the green in two, but one is the safest bet.

Most common should be to lay up straight ahead at the end of the first fairway, giving you a gap between the mountains to shoot. Get as far to the right-center of the end of the fairway as you can without going over — this gives you the best angle of approach. Here’s a 3-wood curved into a right pin. This drive was a bit short and left, but a 5-wood still had enough height and distance to find the hole. And this 3-wood looked like it might hit the left mountain, but it found the hole instead. Again proving that there’s more room than you think, this 4-wood found a way through and into the cup.

Also, you may be able to hammer a high-teed A1 driver out to the second fairway and curve a shot right-to-left around that mountain into the green. This drive was blasted far enough to give an open approach for a double eagle.

Finally, you could lay up short and left to curve an approach from left-to-right around the mountain to the green, but this can be a difficult approach to control — here’s a great 3-wood hole-out from there!

The most common shot is a curved shot around the left side with backspin to hold the green — check out this great 3-wood that found the hole! And here’s a 5-wood that bounced down to a left pin. Finally, here’s a nice ace with the driver.

If you get around left of the first hill, you can also head straight over the second hill with a 5-wood to find the green.

Another option is to take the path around the right side, especially with a wind blowing left. This 3-wood cut hard around the right side finds the hole! This 3-wood played more cut to find a back-center pin. And here’s another ace with the 4-wood.

If not for the mound of rough guarding the green, this hole may be drivable in great conditions. It could be beneficial if you have a great short game to blast it over the water down closer to the green, but most of us will be laying up short.

Many options off the tee, so let’s check them out:

The islands are enticing and seemingly necessary to give you a shot at the green in two, but that’s not true. If you lay up at the left end of the first fairway, you can bring in a driver and still get there. This is a great spot to lay up with a tailwind and a front pin.

First, you can try to land on any of the islands in the group of three straight ahead. The best one to shoot for depends, naturally, on wind and pin placement (but especially the pin). Let’s start with the island closest to you; this one works well with the pin on the right side of the green, so you need little or no curve around the mound on your approach. Here’s an example hole-out. And here’s a 5-wood curved into a front-right pin.

The island in the back-right group of three works well with a center or right pin.

The island on the left in the group works well with a pin on the left.

There’s another longer, narrow island out to the right that offers a straighter approach into the green with any pin placement. Here’s a 3-wood hole-out to a back right pin. Here’s another one curled around the ivy to a left pin.

Finally, you may be able to play it out left of the water in the rough (if it’s not OB) to give yourself an open approach at the green.

There’s only trouble on this one if you’re WAY off. Here’s an ace from the back box.

The best play here is usually to shoot for the small landing spot on the right side straight ahead, short of the fairway neck. Landing here gives you an approach with just a small amount of cut required into the green. Here’s a 3-wood dunk from there.

The alternative is to play the left side. It’s easy to blast a drive out to the left fairway, but you’ll have to shoot straight through some trees into the green, or execute a tough curved shot around the hill into the green.

It’s likely that some day someone will high-tee a driver and carry up onto this green, but it will take perfect conditions. Most times, you’ll lay back in the fairway where you are most comfortable for the lofted approach into this green. Here’s an 8-iron to a left pin, and here’s a 5-iron to a right pin.

This par 4 is always drivable, but the difficulty depends on the tee box. Playing from the right back box requires the right angle and distance to find the gap between the trees on the way to the green. This low-teed 4-wood curved around and spun back into a right pin. And this 5-wood also stayed left of the trees to spin back in the cup. Now this high-teed 6-wood went right at it but caught the mountain…

From the middle box, this 7-wood required only a small cut to find a left pin. This low-teed 6-wood also found the hole. And this 3-iron bounced off the grassy hill, off the rocky hill, and found the cup! Here’s another just unbelievable shot you have to see to believe!

Finally, this high-teed 7-wood cut the corner straight over the mountain and under the tree leaves to dunk emphatically in the cup!

Three different tee boxes offer different lengths and elevations into this par 3 as you begin to close out your round.

It’s uphill from the back-left box — here’s an example ace.

It’s long and downhill from the back-right box — here’s a driver backspun into a front pin. And here’s a 5-wood floated into a back pin.

One play on this long par 5 is to blast a drive as far off the tee as you can to the lower fairway in order to minimize the cut required on your approach down into the green. It’s often a big C3 drive to carry down into the second fairway. Here’s a driver approach that spun back into a right pin.

Another fine option with several setups is to lay up top at the end of the first fairway, where you’ll find an opening to float your approach down into the green. Here’s another hole-out with the driver.

The thing about this hole is the green. While hard to see, there are ridges and tiers that cause your ball to take sharp turns. It’s likely these ridges affect you more mentally, because it’s easy to blame a miss on them. For instance, this putt might not have gone in anyway, but the ridge made the miss look a lot more drastic — check out this example. And don’t be surprised if you see a slope like this during a particular setup:

Now, watch this putt cover all 3 tiers and drop in the hole.

Pearl Lagoon — Hole #18: Par 4

The tough finishing par 4 forces you to cut a shot around the hill and stick a narrow green surrounded by trouble. Normally you play around the right side and curve it in left. A driver has plenty of loft to get over the last hill if need be — here’s a hole-out to a back-right pin. This 3-wood played a small curve around to a back center pin.

This high-teed 5-wood tried to get over the top but got knocked down…into the cup!

Another option, with the wind blowing right, is to curve it around the left side. Here’s a great 5-wood that found the hole for the -30!

Finally, you can go sort of curved up the middle, following the path of this incredible 3-hybrid shot — check it out! But if you get stuck up there, you may have to deal with some deer!

Hole 1 is a long par 4 that will give you a chance at some extra GSPs if you can stick it close. Here’s an example hole-out.
