“At one of the southern most points of the Caribbean lies an 18-hole golf course seemingly tucked away. Sure, the white beaches will look somewhat familiar; as will the crystal blue water and white waves as they crash throughout. But here on the island of Barbados, the traditional “tropical” course label will be rewritten. Rocks and rough and large, never-before-seen palm trees line all fairways. What this land may lack in elevation it makes up for in terrain. Prepare to be floored by its beauty but also bewildered by all these glorious elements coming together all at once.“

Royal Dubai — Hole #1: Par 4

With a great wind, it’s possible to drive this hole!  You’ll just have to hope for a lucky bounce over the stream in front of the green.  Having streaks as your balls on this course greatly help your chances of driving #1.  Check out this huge high-teed A1 driver that finds the cup!  Here’s another awesome ace.

The newer tee box places you in a different spot but many pros can still reach the green…also check out this one straight at it!

While most of us aren’t attempting this anyway, the newer tee boxes may place you farther back so that a layup is indeed the only option.


Royal Dubai — Hole #2: Par 5

From the back-right box off the tee, try to curve it around the right side with a high-teed 3-wood or driver and land the fatter fairway area between the two necks so that you have a reasonable approach.

From the back-left box, you can do the same more often around the left side of the trees.

From the front box, there are a couple options…we’ve discovered that you can blast a driver or 3-wood right through the trees straight ahead to get to that landing area!  Just find a spot between some tree trunks and disregard the branches and leaves…it goes right through to save you the hassle of curving around.  Another option is to turn right and play a huge C3 out to the second fairway, if the setup is there.

There’s another newer tee box way out right that just calls for a straight drive to the fat-center layup area.

And there’s also a deceptive box where it appears you can high-loft a drive over the trees to the second fairway, but the ball just doesn’t get high enough, hitting the trees and falling in the water.  Be careful and cut around if possible, or go to the fat-center layup area again.  OR, another option is to rotate right and line up with the strip of rough to the right of the water.  A medium-teed driver should stay under the last tree helping you land that spot with a nice open look into the green.

Finally, there’s a new box out left where you just play straight to the far end of the fairway neck.

From the back box, here’s a great 5-wood around the left side for an ace!  And this high-teed 5-wood goes around and over the right side for an impressive dunk.  Finally, here’s a great driver cut around the right side for an impressive ace.

From the middle box, this 5-wood curves around the right side to find a left pin.

There’s a newer tee box in the front-right that allows for a straight, albeit long, drive into this green for a chance at eagle.

There’s a group of trees conveniently placed where the left fairway starts to open back up, but the fairway strips by here still present a good option at which to aim.  From the right side there, here’s a nice 2-iron curved around into the cup.

There’s a newer tee box out to the far right that allows you to play up the right fairway instead!

Also, there’s a newer tee box way out left permitting you to play up the left fairway.


Royal Dubai — Hole #6: Par 4

Because this par 4 is not too long, there’s often no reason to blast out in the narrow neck of the fairway.  You can lay back in a couple spots…either to the far right behind the tree, or to the left of the tree…here’s a hole-out from there.  The sand to the right is also a common layup spot since it offers a flat, clear approach.

This hole becomes drivable with one of the newer tee boxes that puts you in the front-left, allowing you to hit over the trees into the green!  However, it can be deceptive, where a high-teed 3W in one look did not clear the trees to the green, so give it some practice and perhaps try to curve around if you aren’t sure.

There’s also a newer tee box in the front right that makes this hole drivable sometimes, but not always.

From the back box, this 5-wood had just enough carry to reach a back pin!

Man does this hole get tough from the newer tee box that tucks you back-left…this requires you to cut the ball around the trees and uphill into this island green, or even to lay up if you don’t have the right clubs.  With an 8 or 9-wood in the back, you can hit over the top of the trees from that spot into the green, so it might be worth it to add one just for this box.

A good play many times off the tee here is to hit long and to the right side of the left fairway, allowing a fairly straight approach into the green.

There’s a newer tee box out left that allows you to play to the end of the left fairway instead, with a much easier approach.  However, be careful of the wall!  If you go too far, you won’t have the loft and distance to get there, so you need to lay back a little bit from the end of the fairway if you go this route.

Take a look at your setup here, as some players are occasionally driving the green with the high-teed 10.5 driver…this is typically around the trees.  However, from the front box, you may be able to take aim straight at it with a good wind – check out this ace!

While not a difficult hole otherwise, the challenge here comes in the approach with the diamond tiered green.  An inaccurate approach could cost you a stroke with a difficult putt.  From the back-right of the fairway, here’s a hole-out to a back pin.

From the new front-right box, this hole becomes drivable most of the time – here’s an example ace!

From the new left box, you can punch a 2-hybrid through the trees at the green for an eagle putt.  Or check out this 3-wood that cut around the outside to find the hole!  A low-teed 3-wood can also cut under/through the trees to the green, but carry is always key!

The most common play here will be out left, as it allows you to create the most distance and get closest to the green, especially with a big A1.  Here’s a driver hole-out from there.

From back-right tee boxes, however, a better play is out to the right edge of the fairway, which allows you to bring a wood uphill into the green from there.

There’s often no harm in laying up straight ahead in the first fairway…you’ll have plenty of distance to get there.

Even down to the next tier can present an open approach — this driver settles into a back pin.

If you need to try to work the ball into a tough right pin, you can play down to the next tiered fairway to the right a bit more which allows you to play more of an A1 approach into the green instead.

From one of the new closer tee boxes, you can drive out to the second fairway for an easier approach.

The left box can provide a fairly straight shot at the green…this one took advantage to a center cup.

From the back-center box, here’s a 5-wood curved around to a front pin.

From the center box, this high-teed 9-wood is perfect over the top for the ace!  And this low-teed driver one-hopped into the hole.  Here’s a great hybrid staying low around the left side for an ace.  Finally, this 6-wood around the left side stays under that last branch to find the cup.

From the right box, here’s a high-teed 8-wood over/through the trees to the cup.

There’s a newer left tee box that allows you to play straight over the water at this green.

Combine nasty winds, a crazy-shaped green and a ton of water, and you’ve got a tough finishing hole.  From the back-center box, here’s a 5-wood ace to a front-center pin.

From the right box, here’s a great 2-hybrid into a left pin!

From the front-left box, this 6-wood was a smooth play into a left pin.


Rhineland — Hole #1: Par 4

This hole is rarely driveable, and in many conditions you can at least blast up close by the green for a chance at an early eagle chip.  From the front box, this drive took aim right at it for an early ace.

From the middle box, this big A1 drive also finds the hole!

Do what you can to settle your drive out in the second fairway past the water, which may require a high tee to be safe.  Anywhere here should be pretty good for an approach for eagle.  Here’s a great dunk from there!

From the newer tee boxes, you might have a setup in the back-right where you can’t clear the second fairway off the tee, so don’t try it!  Lay up to the center/right of the first fairway and you’ll still have plenty of distance to get there in two.


Rhineland — Hole #3: Par 4

With some practice, it’s actually the preferred route to take your drive through the window straight ahead towards the green.  If you make it in, your ball will filter through and end up on the green!  Here’s what appears to be a 2-wood that finds its way through.  Regarding height, a 3-wood should work as should a high-teed driver if needed.  Here’s a 10.5 driver lined up with the window that makes it through.  This 9.5 driver also clears the bottom edge to make it.  And this was even a medium-teed driver with backspin for an ace.

But the best shots have a little right-to-left cut OR catch a nice deflection shooting it left out the back side…watch this driver find the hole for an ace!

With a left wind, it’s also an option to curve a wood around the tower into the green with backspin.

If you prefer to lay up to the right for birdie, be careful of hitting the wall long on the approach, unless it’s all part of the plan!


Rhineland — Hole #4: Par 3

An early challenging par 3 with a big drop into the green, but at least it’s a large green…be careful of going long and bouncing back off the hill.  Here’s a 3-wood that got a nice bounce back to find the hole!  And here’s a driver for the dunk.

It is good to try to blast a big C3 drive up to the hill on the second fairway if you think you can get about halfway up, because it will settle and you’ll have a nice clear approach.  Bite can help it settle and not fall back down much, but roll can help too…this is usually a safe shot in all setups for big hitters.

Otherwise, your layup depends on the clubs in your bag.  If you have a 7-wood, you can play more towards the end of the main fairway.  If a 6-wood, lay back a bit more so you can still clear the hill and have the proper distance for the approach up and around the trees.

With the newer tee boxes, you may be forced to lay up at the end of the first fairway, bringing the shot described above into play.


Rhineland — Hole #6: Par 4

From the left box, you can take pretty straight aim at the green.  Because it’s offset, you can either curve a bit from the left or aim right and take it around left…check out this 3-wood that barely cleared right over to find the hole!

Unfortunately, this hole can be shut down from some of the newer tee box setups where it’s just too long, turning it into a disappointing birdie hole instead.

Rare conditions may present this hole as driveable — check out this huge high-teed C3 drive that reaches the green!  Here’s another one that carried the green.

While straight ahead to the right is certainly the easy shot off the tee, it may leave you with an undesirable wind and a big downhill shot into the green.  You should at least take a look out left, because a high-teed high-loft driver can cut the corner over the trees into the fairway and perhaps offer a better option for your approach.

Another option is cutting the corner right-to-left down into the sand to offer a more level approach — here’s a hole-out from there.


Rhineland — Hole #9: Par 5

There’s almost never any need to try to cut through the tunnel on this one.  Play your drive out as far as you can, towards the middle of the fairway to give yourself some room to hit a wood over the hill into the green with as little curve as you need.

However, now with one of the newer tee boxes, the only shot at the green in two is to lay up at the tunnel and shoot through.  You’ll be tempted to curve into the tunnel, but you really don’t want to do that too much, because you need a low-lofted club to stay low in the tunnel on the approach.  If you land at the entrance in the dirt, for example, you’ll have a punch-shot driver into the green that shouldn’t be much issue.  Be only as aggressive as the loft of your clubs and the experience you gain with the distance they’ll go from the tracks or sand!

There’s another newer tee box out front-right that allows you to blast well clear of the hill guarding the approach from the fairway.

Rhineland — Hole #11: Par 4

This is a really challenging eagle that will have you trying a number of different approaches depending on the setup, both within the tee box and due to the wind.

Perhaps the best setup is from the left of the box with a headwind, since you can high-tee a wood and just try to manage distance by having it settle over the building into the green.  Here’s a nice 6-wood dunk to a center pin.

From the left, there’s also a shot left around the building if you can manage to avoid the windmill blades and stick the green.  And if you overcut it a bit, why not just get a couple bounces off the roof and the rock to find the hole!

From the right, there’s a bit more green to work with, but still a very difficult shot that could have you hitting something like a 5-wood under the arch with backspin, curving right-to-left around the building onto the green.  There’s also some room to go right of the arch completely and over the trees into the green…check out this great 6-wood with a couple bounces into the hole!
