Rocky Hollow — Hole #16: Par 5

Many options off the tee here, so your lay up spot will likely depend on the wind and tee box given.

One good option is to play level with the sand jutting out to the right, to the far right edge of the fairway. This can give you from a 3-wood to a 6-wood over the hill into the green. Check out this great 6-wood deflection that found the hole! And this 3-wood was also a bit off target but got a nice bounce also to find the hole.

From a bit farther up the right side, this 6-wood caught the hill on the way up but had enough to find the green and the hole. And this 7-wood had some nice little cut to find a front pin.

If you have a 9-wood, you can play more to the left, just over the sand running sideways in the fairway. Here’s a 9-wood over the top from there!

Finally, there’s a lay-up spot left of the sand that gives you a 3/4/5-wood over the top — check out this amazing shot that dripped down into the cup! And here’s another one with the 3-wood.

This 5-wood did not have enough loft but caught a couple crazy deflections to find the hole!

Rocky Hollow — Hole #17: Par 3

This par 3 forces you to carry, stick and hold the severely down-sloped green to avoid dropping off the cliff. There’s a back box set and a front box set with significant distance in between to make it challenging. From the back left box, here’s a nice 5-wood with bite to a back pin.

From the back-right box, this 3-wood with backspin settled into the cup.

From the front-right box, this SW backspun and bounced into the cup. And this 8-iron settled into a back-center pin.

Finally, here’s a 9-iron ace from the front left box.

Rocky Hollow — Hole #18: Par 4

Rocky Hollow finishes by forcing you to hit around a rocky hill and stick a small green sloped down towards the water, with trouble all around if you miss. Here’s a nicely-played 3-wood that settles into a left pin.

However, there are some setups that allow you to drive directly at the green. From the right side of the left box, this driver took straight aim at a right pin and one-hopped into the cup. With a strong headwind, this high-teed 3-wood was played perfectly to a front pin.

This driver “missed” right but played the rocks perfectly to bounce back down into the cup!

Finally, check out this driver with a big cut just over the water, into the rocks, up and in…amazing!

Celtic Shores — Golden Tee 2015

Here is a description of this new course for Golden Tee 2015:
“If you listen closely, you can hear the faint sound of Irish music playing in the distance at one of the many pubs nearby. Doolin, Ireland, a place known for its food, drink and surf, also has quite the history when it comes to golf. Don’t let that fool you, however. Celtic Shores not your traditional links course. The pot bunkers are unique from any you’ve climbed in before, and the elevation will have you stopping to enjoy the views. Just wait until you see what it waiting for you on Hole 17.”

Celtic Shores — Hole #1: Par 4

The leadoff hole on Celtic Shores is a dogleg right into a green surrounded by sand in the front and a dropoff cliff in the back. However, take a look if it may be drivable, because it can be done — check out this huge C3 high-teed driver that finds the green!

Otherwise, take the hazards out of play here — just stick it in the fairway and bring in your approach.

Celtic Shores — Hole #2: Par 5

If you don’t mind using a tee, you can high-tee a driver straight ahead to the fairway for a shorter approach into the green. Here’s a hole-out from there.

Another option is to play the right fairway, where you may need up to a driver for your approach into the green — here’s an example hole-out from there.

Celtic Shores — Hole #3: Par 4

Float your drive around either side of the old building down into the green (most often around the left side for a better angle), but don’t be long! Use a high tee if you need the extra distance. Here’s a nice ace from the back-left of the box.

Here’s a fantastic high-teed driver around the right side into a back left pin!

Here’s a 4-wood ace from the back center box. And here’s a 5-wood ace from the right box.

Celtic Shores — Hole #5: Par 5

This undulating par 5 offers you a good chance at eagle early in the round. If you can’t get over the sand to the top of the hill by hitting straight ahead, rotate left or right to play a high-teed A1 or C3 drive for extra distance to get up there. Here’s an example hole-out. And here’s another from a fairway spot to the right in front of an adjacent trap.

Another option is to use the layup spot to the left, short of the sand, to bring in a wood from there — here’s a double eagle from that spot.

A medium-teed driver fits perfectly through the hole in the building straight ahead.

If a 3-wood is a better fit, you can also rotate right once and play it over the right side of that building — here’s an ace using that approach. And so it makes sense that you can curve around the left as well, if that’s a better fit — here’s an ace around the left.

Also, with most setups, a high-teed driver can also get over the right side and curve into the green.

Laying up anywhere towards the very end of the fairway should give you a 3-wood approach to the green. Here’s a hole-out from the right side to a right pin. With this location, you may have to bounce your 3-wood off the top of the front-guarding hill. Here’s another 3-wood from the same area to a left pin.

You can also play more to the center of the end of the fairway and usually be close enough to bring in a 3-wood as well…here’s a hole-out to a right pin.

This hole is rarely drivable with the front box and a nice wind — check out this drive that carried up through the sand onto the green!

Most of the time you can just lay up anywhere in the fairway — here’s an example hole-out.

Celtic Shores — Hole #10: Par 5

This par 5 is long and has an elevated green that makes for a challenging eagle. The fairway caves into a big sand trap right where your drive would normally end up, so you have to find a way to place your drive in a spot that gives you a chance to get there in two.

With a good set up, you can blast a drive (perhaps a high-teed C3) over the sand to the upper part of the fairway.

Other times you won’t have the distance to get up there, so consider playing due right of the sand to the fairway there. Sometimes an A1 driver with backspin is a good option to get there. You still may need up to a driver to get there in two, and carry is key. If you do need a driver, consider that you can bounce up and on, if needed!

It’s riskier, but you can also lay up just short of the sand where there is a level spot in the fairway; this spot offers a 3-wood approach as well.

Celtic Shores — Hole #11: Par 3

We will see some interesting pin placements on the unique shape of this par 3 green, requiring you to work the ball into the wind and slope in some situations.

Here’s a nice ace from the longer right box. From the middle box, here’s a great cut into a right pin. And here’s an ace from the left box to a back pin. There’s also another tee box to the left and shorter from here, offering four looks at the green.

This par 4 is always drivable but requires you to shoot over a hill guarding the green. If you trickle down short, there’s sand…that’s okay, because being long is wet. You can either take a 3-wood (high-teed can be good) over the top, or a driver around the left side to get there.

This driver missed left but caught a friendly bounce back to the green and into the cup!

Most of the time, the best play is out left to stay level with the green for a manageable approach shot.

You can also play straight ahead if you like your odds with the uphill approach — here’s a 5-wood hole-out. This 3-wood didn’t have enough loft but got a nice skip and hop to find the hole!

You will be shooting at any of three different greens off the tee here!

To the farther back-left green, here’s a 3-wood ace.

To the middle rounder green, here’s a 5-wood ace.

You may also shoot to a closer front-right green.

This drivable par 4 should have you thinking right-center of the green to avoid all the danger elsewhere. It’s usually a 3-wood, sometimes high-teed with a headwind — here’s an example ace. Here’s a high-teed 5-wood that also finds the hole.

Hole #16 offers a couple options that are decent, and one that is difficult. First, if you can carry up on top of the hill straight ahead towards the green, you’ll have a shot there in two. It was windy, but check out this dunk! This can be a troublesome spot with a strong headwind, and it’s certainly challenging with a strong sidewind too.

Next, you can play long down the fairway past the tower to give you a line to the green in two. Here’s a long holeout from there. This one was closer to the right side of the fairway and offered a much closer look for double eagle.

The narrow fairway patch straight ahead is difficult to stick and should be a last resort for a shot at eagle. Here’s a driver worked into a right pin from there. And here’s a 3-wood into a back left pin.

Hole #17 is a par 3 way downhill with a severe penalty for missing. With a front-right pin, being short isn’t bad if you have backspin, because it will bounce down onto the green — here’s an example ace. And check out the bounces this one got to find the hole!

Wind is always a factor with this downhill shot, and you’ll see some crazy angles into the hole — check out this ace out right and blown back to a front-left pin. It’s hard not to at least put bite on your shot even when the wind is in your face, but check out the placement of this 5-wood with no spin.

You’ll finish your round on Celtic Shores by curving a drive around the mountain to the left into a green tucked behind it. This 3-wood took straighter aim at the green and took it way out right to get over and around the mountain, backspinning into the cup. This high-teed 4-wood cut the corner a bit but stayed high enough to come on down and dunk in the cup! And this driver was a perfect play to a back-left pin. Finally, check out this amazing and rare driver dunk!

You can also rotate right once and play more of a C2-type shot into the green — here’s a great 3-wood with backspin to a left pin.

This shot is very challenging with a strong wind blowing right. Perhaps your best option with that setup is a low-teed driver with max cut. If you use the Hawks, a 2-hybrid is an option as well.

If you want to preserve a good round with a tough setup, just lay out right to bring in your approach for birdie — here’s a hole-out from the fairway.

A drivable par 4 that will really test your elevation control as you loft over the mountain and let your drive float into the green. Sand will catch some errant shots and still leave you an eagle chip, but water may catch others!

Here’s a great 4-wood dunk to a front pin. Here’s a 3-wood straight over to a center pin.

If you have masterful control of your cut shots, you can curve into tough pin placements with an opposing wind!

Downhill and fairly long — not the easiest of par 3s to be presented with as the third hole.

Here’s a driver ace to a back pin.

Pearl Lagoon — Hole #4: Par 5

The only real option off the tee is to hit it as far as you can down the fairway straight ahead. You can try to curve a shot or just blast a big B2 driver with roll or a high tee. The farther you get, the less you’ll have to curve around the mountain on the approach. This one got far enough for a straight 6-wood into the pin. This driver played just a small curve around the mountain to a back-left pin.

You’ll see an elevated landing area with fairway grass to the right, but it’s narrow and difficult to stick. If you land it, you’ll be rewarded with a mostly straight shot into the green for your second. A driver could clip the right side of the mountain but may be the necessary club with a headwind.

You’ll either have a straight shot or a small curve with any wood up to a driver into this drivable par 4 with the scenic backdrop.

From the right box, you may have the option to shoot a 3-wood through the gap in the trees straight at the green. Here’s another 3-wood medium-teed that stayed under the big leaf. A driver works too if you want more club!

This driver was way off base but caught some incredible deflections to find the hole! So did this low-teed 3-wood…wow.

Most of the time, you can just float something like a high-teed 5-wood around the left side and aim to stick the center of the green. This medium-teed 5-wood hopped up into a left pin.

An alternative to floating a wood into the green is to low-tee a driver and play a more direct angle at the green, under the left tree — check out this great ace.

Pearl Lagoon — Hole #7: Par 5

There look to be up to 3 different shots off the tee to give you a shot at the green in two, but one is the safest bet.

Most common should be to lay up straight ahead at the end of the first fairway, giving you a gap between the mountains to shoot. Get as far to the right-center of the end of the fairway as you can without going over — this gives you the best angle of approach. Here’s a 3-wood curved into a right pin. This drive was a bit short and left, but a 5-wood still had enough height and distance to find the hole. And this 3-wood looked like it might hit the left mountain, but it found the hole instead. Again proving that there’s more room than you think, this 4-wood found a way through and into the cup.

Also, you may be able to hammer a high-teed A1 driver out to the second fairway and curve a shot right-to-left around that mountain into the green. This drive was blasted far enough to give an open approach for a double eagle.

Finally, you could lay up short and left to curve an approach from left-to-right around the mountain to the green, but this can be a difficult approach to control — here’s a great 3-wood hole-out from there!
